Membership grades

There are four main grades and two affiliate grades of membership in IMIS, reflecting the individual's level of academic and experiential qualifications. Criteria for each grade are outlined below. If you are unsure which grade is most appropriate for you, our intelligent online application system, based on the SFIA (Skills Framework for the Information Age) will work it out for you.

Professional membership grades

Fellow (FIMIS)

The highest grade, for members of the profession who have achieved distinction and/or a senior position over a career of not less than 15 years' experience.

Full Member (MIMIS)

Requires a minimum of 8 years' work experience, combined with appropriate professional qualification or waiver.

Associate Member (AIMIS)

Requires a minimum of 4 years' experience, combined with appropriate professional qualification or waiver.

Licentiate Member (LIMIS)

Members having up to 4 years' work experience, combined with appropriate professional qualification or waiver.

Affiliate grades

Practitioner Member

Open to those who are spending a substantial proportion of their working day involved in some aspect of IS. Carries the option of applying for Licentiate grade in due course.

Student Member

Open to those studying for a recognised IS qualification.
